2018 Travels
St. Petersburg, Russia
October 12th to 17th, 2018
St. Petersburg was a fun city to visit! We loved the architecture, museums and canal rides.
Below: The longest escalator in the world is in the Admiralteyskaya Metro Station. The escalator is 453 feet long and transports you to the deep, underground metro system.
Below: The most impressive thing about St. Petersburg is its architecture. The 'Church on Spilled Blood' is beautiful both inside and out. Unfortunately the top spire was in scaffolding when we were there.
Below: The Winter Palace currently houses the Hermitage Museum, which is the second-largest museum in the world (only the Louvre is larger). The building itself is a museum masterpiece.
Below: This is the Ball Room in the Palace.
Below: The mummy of an Egyptian Priest was on display.
Below: The Alexander Column commemorates Russia's victory over Napoleon. This granite monolith weighs 660 tons and took 3,000 men to raise it in 1832. It is the largest monolith ever raised.
Below: Boating through the canals was a great way to see the architecture.
Below: Beautiful churches are common all over St. Petersburg.
Below: Russian Nesting Dolls (Matryoshka) continue to be a popular souvenir, and every gift shop had walls of dolls. We saw doll sets ranging in price from $5 to $37,000!
Bill's grandfather is Russian, and it made Bill happy when people on the street came up to him and started speaking Russian. He likes to think the locals could see the Russian in him, and they just assumed he was Russian.
St. Petersburg was a nice end to our 2018 travels.
